CETRA Celebrates International Translation Day 2021

Happy International Translation Day 2021! We take time today every year to celebrate and recognize the dedication of translators and interpreters worldwide for their contributions to our global society.

International Translation Day is celebrated on September 30, which is the feast day of St. Jerome, the Bible translator who is considered the patron saint of translators.

International Translation Day is celebrated by many international organizations and individuals within the language community. The International Federation of Translators (FIT) holds an annual poster contest to recognize this special day. After more than a year of COVID, the theme for this year’s contest is unity. In addition, the American Translators Association (ATA) has been celebrating all week with interactive posts on its social media channels.

In 2017 the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution recognizing September 30 as International Translation Day, and recognizes multilingualism as a core value of the United Nations.

We greatly appreciate the importance of translators and interpreters on this day, and we know your passion and effort are carried out on a daily basis throughout the year. We thank you for all that you do to help people globally to understand each other and the world around them.

According to UNESCO, there are about 7,000 languages used worldwide, and at least 40% of these languages are at some level of endangerment. Indigenous languages are particularly vulnerable, according to UNESCO, because many of them are not taught at school or used in the public sphere.
