Happy International Mother Language Day 2020
Today, February 21, 2020, we join the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the world in celebrating International Mother Language Day 2020.
According to the United Nations (UN), International Mother Language Day has been observed every year since February 2000 to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism. Each year typically has a unique theme. This year’s theme is “Languages without Borders.”
“By bringing their speakers closer together, by allowing them to flourish in a shared context, mother tongues generate social inclusion, innovation and imagination. They also breathe life into cultural diversity and serve as instruments of peace,” said Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO, on the occasion of International Mother Language Day in an open letter.
This year’s poster, social media pack and other information can be downloaded from UNESCO.
International Mother Language Day was proclaimed by the General Conference of UNESCO in November 1999. The UN General Assembly welcomed the proclamation of the day in its resolution A/RES/56/262 of 2002.
We welcome anyone who is multilingual to join our international network of freelance translators and interpreters, or request a quote if you have a language need.
