CETRA Celebrates International Translation Day

CETRA Celebrates International Translation Day, September 30^th. International Translation Day is an opportunity to pay tribute to the work of language professionals. This work plays an important role in uniting nations, facilitating dialog, understanding, and developing and strengthening world peace and security.

Each year translators, interpreters, and terminologists celebrate International Translation Day with a unifying theme. This year’s theme is Translation, shaping a future you can trust. The International Federation of Translators say the theme highlights the important role of human trust. Specifically, the role of translators, interpreters and terminologists in ensuring trustworthy communication, building dialogue and trust between parties and providing oversight to AI-generated text and machine translation.

In 2017 the General Assembly declared September 30^th as International Translation Day. Historically, September 30^th celebrates the feast of St. Jerome, the translator of the Bible who is also considered the patron saint of translators. St. Jerome was a priest from Italy who translated most of the Bible into Latin from Greek. He also translated parts of the Hebrew Gospel into Greek. His native tongue was the Illyrian dialect and he learned Latin in school. St. Jerome was also fluent in Greek and Hebrew. He died near Bethlehem on September 30, 420.
