According to History.com, Independence Day (also known as July 4th) has been a U.S. paid holiday for federal employees since 1941. However, the U.S. Congress first made July 4th as a federal holiday in 1870. Festivities to celebrate the holiday include fireworks, parades, concerts, and family gatherings and barbecues.
