CETRA’s First Movie Night

Monday, September 19th, marked CETRA‘s first ever movie night. Linguists, friends, and clients gathered at CETRA’s offices in Philadelphia to watch The Woman with the 5 Elephants, directed by Vadim Jendreyko and nominated for Best Documentary in the 2009 European Film Awards. The film tells the story of Svetlana Geier, a Ukrainian-born German translator known for her unprecedented translation of Dostoyevsky’s five largest works. Her haunting past plays a part in her successful career in Germany; her story is woven into the text of her translations. Her inspiring story teaches us to live attentively, to listen for the cadences, to care about the small things. And above all, to “always translate with your nose in the air”.
